While contamination of blood cultures (BCs) can never be eliminated, there is evidence that adherence to best practice BC collection techniques can minimize BC contamination, which might be best achieved with a dedicated phlebotomy team. Nurses need education on up-to-date best practices on wound culture and blood culture collection, common sources of contamination, and proper techniques to implement those best practices, which will result in better patient care.

This program discusses proper techniques for wound and blood cultures. Topics include evidence-based best practices for the collection, handling, and transport of wound and blood cultures to ensure specimen integrity and accurate results; common sources of contamination and procedural errors in culture collection and their impact on patient care and laboratory interpretation; and proper culture collection techniques to support timely diagnosis, appropriate antimicrobial therapy, and improved patient outcomes. There is also a discussion about how implicit bias may impact healthcare.

When there is potential for perinatal HIV transmission, evidence-based, patient-centered counseling should be provided to support shared decision-making about infant feeding. Counseling about infant feeding should begin prior to conception or as early as possible in pregnancy; information about and plans for infant feeding should be reviewed throughout pregnancy and again after delivery.

This program discusses 2023 and 2024 changes in infant feeding in the U.S. Perinatal HIV Guidelines. Topics include the motivations of those who want to breast/chest feed, what is known about the risk of HIV transmission via breastmilk – with and without antiretrovirals – and what changed in the U.S. Perinatal HIV Guidelines as of 2023/2024. There is also a discussion about how implicit bias may impact healthcare.
