Childhood experiences help to shape every aspect of the individual, including lifelong health needs. Nurses interact with patients more than other healthcare professionals; therefore, understanding how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) shape the individual can also improve communication between nurse and patient and improve patient outcomes.

Topics covered in this program include events that comprise ACEs; the impact ACEs can have on a person throughout their lifecycle; the concept of resilience and its impact relative to protection from chronic conditions; and the primary chronic conditions correlated to ACEs. There is also a discussion about how implicit bias may impact healthcare.
